Hello. My name is Dave Hood and welcome to J and D Woodworking. I have a small shop about the size of a garage in Pembroke Massachusetts. I am a retired nurse and a disabled Navy veteran. I have been woodworking part time for many years, mainly doing things for myself and friends.

I like to make things from hardwood, both domestic and exotic. I mainly use Cedar for exterior items such bird houses, birdfeeders, planters, tool boxes etc. I like to use dovetails where possible as I believe they give a beautiful touch to whatever I am making. I have also been using inlay dovetails for a lot of my work because they seem to really make the corners pop. I like to add a lot of detail whenever possible to give things a very finished look. Sometimes the detail may be a round over on the edges of the project or a multi step router design. These details add a lot of time, skill and knowledge to a project but I feel it is worth it to have a finished product that you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else. Many of my products are one of a kind even though they are similar to other things I have made because of different wood grains, sizes or shapes.

I use appropriate finishes depending on the intended use of the product. I like to use water based polyurethane because there is no amber tone to it and it leaves the true color of the wood showing through and makes the product easy to clean. I rarely use stain for anything unless it is specifically requested. Stain just does not look like the wood it is intended to mimic.

On anything that is designed to be used for food prep whether that means cutting, slicing or chopping, I use food grade mineral oil and waxes. I don’t know how many times I have seen products that are made with stains and resin/epoxy that are intended to be cut on or chopped on. I don’t know of any stain or resin that is intended to be ingested.
